Empowering Communities Together: Brother Bills Helping Hand

Brother Bill’s Helping Hand Leverages North Texas Giving Day Into Year-Round Support

Brother Bill’s Helping Hand offers a diverse array of programs and wrap-around services. Through their support from North Texas Giving Day and Communities Foundation of Texas, they are able address the multifaceted needs of the community by providing vital resources and fostering resilience among individuals and families in North Texas.

For eight decades, Brother Bill’s Helping Hand has reached out with compassion and comprehensive support, to provide people in need stepping stones toward a better life.

When Wes Keyes joined as CEO in 2017, the organization served only one zip code, 75212, in Dallas. Keyes quickly recognized the pressing demand to expand their service area. As a result, now whenever people seek assistance, the response is a resounding ‘yes.’

“We’ve really just expanded our reach in ways that we could never have imagined, and we try to follow where the need is,” Keyes said.

Brother Bill’s outreach now extends to over 100 zip codes across North Texas, with six physical locations that represent a vital lifeline for community members throughout the metroplex. As Brother Bill’s has forged partnerships with various organizations to offer a comprehensive array of wraparound services, Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) has supported this growth with financial assistance by awarding multiple grants to the organization over the past several years.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Brother Bill’s received a grant from CFT to help serve an increased number of families showing up for food, clinic services, and telehealth. This funding created the opportunity to serve up to 1,200 individuals.

Brother Bill’s comprehensive services include a community health clinicmental health servicesadult education programs, an after school program, multiple grocery store service days, and an e-pantry. Among its partnered offerings is the South Dallas Community Market, a satellite food pantry created in collaboration with Bridge Builders that has been operational for just over a year. “The South Dallas Community Market is a wonderful place to go. The people there are so welcoming and helpful. The fresh food and other goods are exactly what is needed in this area,” said Brother Bill’s neighbor, Marlene Shakir, emphasizing the market’s value to the community.

“We’ve really just expanded our reach in ways that we could never have imagined, and we try to follow where the need is.”, said Keyes.

In 2021, CFT awarded two grants focused on Brother Bill’s Community Clinic and the Food Equity Innovation Challenge. These funds were used to increase access to clinical care, mental health support, and quality food. An additional CFT grant to expand services was awarded in 2022, further strengthening Brother Bill’s ability to meet the diverse needs of the communities it serves.

“The biggest way Communities Foundation of Texas has helped is by being that continual partner – its tentacles touch everything. They are a great, great resource for us and a great support to help us be able to offer all these wraparound services,” said Keyes.

By supporting Brother Bill’s Helping Hand, donors, volunteers, and partners contribute to a continuum of care that addresses immediate needs and fosters lasting change. This support helps build a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community.

Veronica Gonzalez and her husband participated in Brother Bill’s Home Buyer Workshop, aiming to realize their dream of homeownership.

With guidance from a bank representative at the workshop, they purchased their home in Dallas just weeks later. Gonzalez attributes this accomplishment to Brother Bill’s specifically offering these vital programs in Spanish.

“If the information had not been available in my language, my husband and I would not have received the help we needed to purchase our home,” she said.

While Brother Bill’s Helping Hand continues to strive towards a future where every individual and family in North Texas has the support they need to thrive, their ongoing partnership with Communities Foundation of Texas underscores the transformative power of collective support and shared vision.
