Great corporate responsibility practices to emulate from the Points of Light 2024 Civic 50

Points of Light, a nonpartisan, global nonprofit organization that inspires, equips, and mobilizes millions of people to take action that changes the world, released The Civic 50 of 2024 in July. This report recognizes the 50 most community-minded companies in the United States with annual revenues of at least $1 billion.

The Civic 50 survey, administered by True Impact, evaluates applicants based on four dimensions of corporate citizenship and social impact programs:

  • Investment of resources
  • Integration across business functions
  • Institutionalization through policies and systems
  • Impact measurement

Key insights in this 12th annual report on trends in corporate social impact, civic engagement, and community include:

  • 75% of Gen Zs and millennials say that an organization’s community engagement and societal impact is an important factor when considering a potential employer.
  • 94% of The Civic 50 integrate community engagement strategies with employee engagement and are committed to a cross-functional understanding of community engagement.
  • Civic 50 honorees
    • Engage 40% of employees on average in external volunteering. That’s twice the average for US companies.
    • Engage almost half of all employees (49%) in internal company volunteering activities, such as employee resource groups and company-sponsored educational initiatives on key issues.
    • Primarily focus their social impact and community engagement programs on civil/human rights, equality, equity, and inclusion; health and well-being; education; environment and sustainability.
    • Contribute more than five times the cash and in-kind donations to charitable causes compared to the average US company, as a percentage of revenue.
    • Offer paid volunteer time off (84%), which is significantly higher than the percentage of companies with similar programs for domestic employees.

Companies in our Business Impact Network have embraced many of the trends for years. Many offer Volunteer Time Off (VTO), several have internal volunteering through employee resource groups, and all engage more than the U.S. average of 20% of employees.

There are many more insights in this report that are well worth reading and discussing. The Civic 50 provides a roadmap for good corporate citizenship. These companies have intentionally integrated community engagement and social impact throughout their business functions. The result is corporate volunteering that serves as a pathway for impact for the community, the company, and the individual employee.
