Grandparents Spark New Generation

Hegi Grandchildren Take Up the Torch of Giving

Grandparents Fred and Jan Hegi are passing on a powerful legacy by empowering their six grandchildren to change lives through The Hegi Grandchildren’s Fund at Communities Foundation of Texas.

The fund not only serves as a charitable resource but as a way to instill the importance of giving in a future generation. Through the fund, each grandchild will be giving $200 every year to a charity of their choice — a responsibility that each of them has agreed to approach thoughtfully.

Along with their grandparents and parents, Kate, Mary Allison, Hunter, Anna, Lila and Katherine met with Communities Foundation of Texas to discuss the privilege of giving to others in need. Together, they talked about their own values and charitable interests, and how CFT can help them connect their resources to local needs.

Each child expressed a deep desire to engage charitably in our community and signed a document pledging to honor the opportunity they have been given to give back. CFT gave each child a copy of The Giving Book by Ellen Sabin to aid them as they consider their charitable contributions.

When asked why it is important to help people, six-year-old Lila answered, “because they might be lonely and feel invisible, and if you care about them, it will make them happy.”
