In 2018, Communities Foundation of Texas committed to using its efforts and influence to create thriving communities for all. While COVID-19 changed our world in many ways this year, it did not change the relevance of this goal. Even in the midst of surviving a global pandemic, we’re finding that our eyes and actions must stay trained on matters of thriving – so that life for each person our work touches remains sustainable through times of both prosperity and unsteadiness.

New Collin County Economic Opportunity Assessment Released 

This assessment highlights challenges and opportunities in Collin County


CFT released a new assessment in partnership with JPMorgan Chase reavealing that, while Collin County’s rapidly expanding population and young, diverse workforce is one of the region’s greatest assets, Collin County also faces many obstacles and barriers that threaten the upward mobility of many residents, including disparities by race/ethnicity, income, educational attainment, and wealth.

In today’s business section of The Dallas Morning News, a story about a Blackbaud data breach that occurred earlier this year incorrectly listed Communities Foundation of Texas as an organization that may have been part of new findings related to the breach. Blackbaud, one of our third-party service providers, has been a long-time technology vendor of CFT, and is widely considered to be the leading data management technology provider serving the nonprofit sector.

The Ashish & Mona Khanna Family Charitable Gift Fund at CFT


Giving has always been a priority for Ashish and Mona Khanna. After moving from Chicago to North Texas in 2015, they knew that finding ways to invest in their local community would be key to achieving their philanthropic goals. In 2018, Ashish met CFT staff at a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® (CAP®) event, and the Khannas established the Ashish & Mona Khanna Family Charitable Gift Fund, a donor-advised fund at CFT, later that year.

We at CFT are constantly asking, “What is ours to do?” In April 2020, we answered the question by launching Philanthropy 360, a podcast for nonprofits and others striving to build thriving communities through health, wealth, living, and learning.

Revive Dallas Small Business Relief Fund

Supporting small businesses in a big way


CFT has partnered with The Dallas Entrepreneur Center (The DEC Network) and LiftFund to launch the Revive Dallas Small Business Relief Fund, a $5 million relief loan fund offering loans to support primarily minority- and women-owned small businesses and entrepreneurs during the COVID-19 crisis. To date, almost $3 million has been committed to the fund. Fifty-three businesses have received loans so far, with 70% of businesses minority-owned and 58% women-owned.

Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy

CFT’s Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy (ELP) is a nine-month program with a mission to engage, educate, and connect North Texas young leaders in taking an active role in building thriving communities for all, and to strengthen the philanthropic impact of the next generation of leaders in North Texas.

Founded In 1919, the Dallas Athletic Club (DAC) has a rich heritage and a well-earned reputation for quality, not only among its club members, but also among its staff. The Dallas Athletic Club Scholarship Fund at CFT is now celebrating its fifth year of awarding scholarships and is one of the ways in which the club seeks to invest in its staff members and their families.
