Readers 2 Leaders

  • Readers 2 Leaders (R2L) was founded in 2010 in Dallas, TX with a mission to develop and grow the reading skills of underserved children ages 3-10 in the West Dallas community.

    Programming provides high-quality reading intervention to help children accelerate their reading growth and catch up to grade level and beyond. Given its proven success and the high demand for early childhood literacy intervention, Readers 2 Leaders has since expanded its reach and is serving 1,100 students through R2L tutoring and partners trained in coaching and training programs.

    Through small group tutoring, one-on-one reading practice, and engaging activities, Readers 2 Leaders students learn to recognize the letters and sounds that make up words as well as the comprehension skills they need to understand stories. From this foundation, students master age-appropriate literacy skills and learn to love reading.

  • Board members should be West Dallas residents or community members and are preferred to have skills or experience in:

    • Governance oversight
    • Marketing and communications
    • Community outreach/community relations
    • Education (current or former educators)
    • Finance. accounting, or auditing
    • Attend and actively participate in board meetings. Board meetings are scheduled for January, March, May, June, September, and November.
    • Attend and actively participate in committee meetings and related work (1-3 hours per month). Committees meet monthly.
    • Attend and actively participate in annual retreat planning (one weekend day)
    • Attend special events (two per year recommended)
    • Attend new board member orientation (about 3-4 hours)
    • Identify and cultivate potential donors and recruit sponsors
    • Meet with potential donors/funders to make a case for supporting Readers 2 Leaders
    • Achieve an annual give-or-get contribution of $2,500 (Readers 2 Leader strives to work with each member to identify opportunities to fulfill the give-or-get requirement. Peer-to-peer fundraising opportunities as well as the ability to give in-kind are available to make this goal accessible to all potential members)
  • Readers 2 Leaders board terms last two years, and members may serve up to three consecutive terms.
