One of the goals of the George W. Bush Institute is to improve the human condition in North Korea, and as part their mission to do so the Lindsay Lloyd North Korea Freedom Scholarship Fund was established in 2017. The purpose of the Fund is to provide scholarships to lawful permanent residents of the United States who were born in North Korea prior to legal immigration to the United States or their immediate family members. Recipients may use the funds to support their educational programs at any accredited college or university in the United States or its possessions, including but not limited to four-year universities and community colleges, as well as other education providers for the purposes of attaining professional certification, English-language classes, or a professional or vocational program. In the scholarship’s inaugural year, 8 scholarships were awarded in the total amount of $25,000.
